Quantum Material Research Begins: Kagome Magnets
I have been immersing myself in the most important step of research: literature review!
I spoke with my mentor, Dr. Ghimire, and we decided to focus our research on Kagome magnets. Kagome magnets got their name from their shared pattern with Japanese kagome woven baskets. The term was first coined in physics by Itiro Syozi, who was interested in the potential the geometry of these particular compounds had to host a variety of electronic and magnetic properties. Syozi later discovered that the antiferromagnetic Kagome lattice is actually the most frustrated 2D magnetic system possible to construct. In other words, this kagome lattice regularly contains interatomic forces that lead to complex structures and several distinct ground states. You can learn more about Kagome magnets here.
I will be growing a Kagome magnet and measuring its magnetic and electronic properties. I will let you know more about the process in the coming weeks!
